Super Potency Extract
Schizandra chinensis is one of the elite tonic herbs in the entire world. It is staggeringly popular in Asia and its reputation is rapidly growing in America. It is known as the “Quintessence of Chinese Herbs.” It is the only herb known that tonifies all three of the Three Treasures (Jing, Qi and Shen). It is the only herb that enters all twelve of the meridian systems that nourish all of our internal organs and functions. It is the only herb that simultaneously tonifies all five elements (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal). No other herb compares in this capacity to nurture the entire body and mind, not even Ginseng or Reishi. Schizandra is especially beneficial to the lungs, kidneys and liver, all herbs organ systems that play a key role in our longevity and well being.
Schizandra is one of the primary herbs used by both men and women in Chinese herbalism to promote healthy aging and healthy sexual functions. It is not hormonal and is very safe. It is also regarded to be the prime brain tonic of Chinese herbalism, along with Himalayan Rhodiola. To top it off, Schizandra is one of the two main beauty herbs of the Orient, along with Pearl. It has been used for thousands of years for all these benefits and has never lost its reputation in any regard. Most of its classical functions are now supported by scientific evidence.
There are a couple of problems with producing a superb Schizandra product.
Issue #1: Good, REAL Schizandra is not so easy to get. Schizandra grows abundantly in the forests of Changbai Mountain, a non-polluted, pristine biosphere in northeastern China (Manchuria). Schizandra from that region is called Bei Wu Wei Zi (Northern Five Flavor Herb). It is collected annually in the fall by local collectors. It is also now being grown by some farmers at lower altitude in a neighboring region (Liaoning).
Unfortunately for most Americans, most of the high grade Schizandra is pre-purchased by a few Taiwanese and South Korean mega-herb companies who sell entirely to the vast Asian market. For a few years just recently, these companies controlled the entire world market, and real Schizandra was very hard to get – and the price was driven up significantly.
As a result, starting about 7 years ago, marketers starting selling a different species of Schizandra, Schisandra sphenanthera, especially targeting the American market where most buyers don’t know the difference. In China it is called Nan Wu Wei Zi, Southern Schizandra, because it grows in southern China, not northeastern China where the real stuff comes from. This variety of “Schizandra” is looked upon as a very inferior tonic in China and is not used as a legitimate Schizandra substitute by reputable companies.
U.S. marketers have either been ignorant of this, or have ignored the issue, and often even state that they are selling the Schisandra chinensis on their labels and in their literature, even when they aren’t. I have even met major distributors that sell to the vast majority of herbal supplement companies in America who did not know the difference, and after investigating at our behest, found that they were indeed buying and selling Schisandra sphenanthera, the false Schizandra. Now, this Schisandra sphenanthera does have some valid herbal uses, but NOT as a tonic substitute for genuine Schisandra chinensis. Not in Asia and not here in America.
Actually, most distributors and dietary supplement companies don’t even know this is going on! They just buy for price and since the Schisandra sphenanthera is much cheaper, they buy that and pass it on as true Schizandra. That is the main reason that there are such price discrepancies on the market. REAL Schizandra is at least 3 times more expensive than the southern faux Schizandra so commonly available in America these days. You can buy a $7 bottle of Schizandra extract, but you get what you pay for.
Because we do not buy our herbs from brokers in the United States – we only buy direct – we know exactly where our Schizandra comes from and have complete control over that. We have NEVER used anything other than real Schizandra chinensis, even during the Schizandra shortage of the past 7 years. This is a very important herb to me and in my household – I named my daughter Schizandra!
Issue #2: Even after obtaining great quality, genuine Schizandra chinensis from Changbai Mountain, there are significant hurdles.
Schizandra is best consumed fairly fresh. It is best to make the extract from berries that are still moist and flavorful. But Schizandra is generally sun dried at the location of harvest in the mountains. That is not such a problem, because the dried Schizandra remains moist and very tasty for some time. However, since we have been producing the tincture extract here in America, we always ship the dried berries to America and then on to the extractor. The process can take some months and during that time the berries lose a little of their potency. Other companies may use berries that are a year or two old, and their extracts will be proportionately weaker.
Now that we are producing our tinctures at FITT in China, we can use VERY fresh Schizandra. This, we believe will make a HUGE difference in physical and mental benefits from the Schizandra.
Issue #3: Some of the phytochemicals that make Schizandra SO SPECIAL are destroyed by ALL conventional extraction methods. Alcohol extracts out the chemicals that are soluble in alcohol and water extracts out the chemicals soluble in water. Some other large molecules are destroyed, unfortunately, in the process. WITH FITT, NOTHING IS DESTROYED. Therefore, a FITT tincture will contain all the phytonutrients contained in the herb while it is still fresh off the vine. That is why the technology is called Fingerprint Identical Transfer Technology. The "fingerprint" refers to the unique chemical composition of the herb in question, in this case Schizandra. FITT does not cook the herbs to extract them and therefore enzymes and other complex proteins are preserved. Even though this is an "extract," its chemistry is essentially "raw."
So, no matter how great our previous versions of Schizandra and Lycium Drops were, they do not compare to this new batch produced with FITT.
Five distinct flavors mean potent phytochemistry
You might have noticed in the testimonials by our senior herbalists that they repeatedly mentioned the five flavors in Schizandra. As professionals and real hardcore connoisseurs of Chinese tonic herbalism, they know that the five flavors are of great importance in terms of an herbs efficacy.
The flavor of Schizandra is more important than just its pleasure stimulating quality. Schizandra is called “Five Flavor Herb” in Chinese (Wu Wei Zi), meaning that the fruit contains all five of the classical flavors. These flavors are associated with the five elemental energies – Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal.
Water has a salty flavor, Wood has a sour flavor, Fire has a slightly bitter flavor, Earth has a sweet flavor and Metal has a spicy/pungent flavor. Schizandra has all five flavors, and that is why it is so unique. It is the only herb in the entire Chinese herbal system that has all five flavors clearly present, while also entering all twelve meridians and nurturing all three treasures.
Combined, Schizandra is flavorful, to say the least, but surprisingly pleasant and satisfying.
Each of the flavors is created by certain phytochemicals that actually DO influence the organic functions of the body as described by the ancient Chinese.
The salty flavored phytochemicals in Schizandra have been shown to influence the adrenal glands, sexual tissues and kidneys. These phytochemicals also strengthen human memory.
The sour flavored phytochemicals have potent influence on liver functions. Schizandra is a very powerful liver cleanser and protects the liver against microbes and toxic chemicals. It stimulates balanced liver functioning. Schizandra helps even out the emotions.
The bitter flavored phytochemicals strengthen cardiovascular functioning and the mind. It has a calming effect on the heart and mind while making the mind clear and strong.
The sweet flavored phytochemicals provide energy, improve digestion and tonify metabolism. They also strengthen the various immune functions, building stronger resistance to disease.
The pungent/spicy phytochemicals strengthen respiratory functions, helping us to breathe more deeply and improving our respiratory capacity. This is very, very important to our health and well being since breath is life – and many of us do not breathe deeply enough. Schizandra is a very important lung tonic and that is one reason the Taoists consume it daily.
