Triphala is a herbal blend commonly used in Ayurveda, a system of holistic medicine from India. Triphala contains three different fruits native to India, which are dried and ground into powder. Cleanses the System
According to Yoga Journal, triphala gently cleans toxins and waste materials from the body without a harsh laxative effect. Ayurveda teaches that a buildup of these toxins can cause symptoms such as indigestion, constipation, lethargy, depression and joint pain. Triphala reportedly relieves these symptoms while reducing cholesterol and high blood pressure, improving circulation and strengthening the digestive system. Triphala can be taken safely for up to six months.
Inhibits Bacterial Growth
Research has shown that triphala may inhibit the growth of bacteria. A 2007 study conducted by the University of Madras in India and published in the journal Phytotherapy Research tested the effectiveness of triphala as an antimicrobial agent. Researchers obtained bacteria from HIV-infected patients and found that triphala inhibited bacterial growth, indicating that triphala may warrant further investigation as a potential treatment for antibacterial-resistant bacteria.
Similar results were found in a 2008 study published in the Journal of Surgical Research. The study tested the effects of triphala on skin wounds in rats. The rats treated with triphala showed a significant improvement in wound closure and a reduction in bacterial growth. Human studies are needed to support these findings.
Suppresses Cancer Cell Growth
Studies have shown that triphala may have potential as a cancer treatment. In a 2008 study published in the journal BMC Cancer, researchers at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center used triphala on mice that had been implanted with pancreatic cancer tumors. The study found that the triphala killed the cancer cells through a process called apoptosis, in which the body naturally disposes of damaged or unnecessary cells.
An earlier study conducted in 2006 at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai, India, and published in Cancer Letters yielded similar results, with triphala causing apoptosis in both human breast cancer cells and in cancer cells in mice. In both cases, the triphala killed the cancer cells while leaving normal cells intact.
Triphala may cause gastrointestinal discomfort and gas. If you experience diarrhea while taking triphala, reduce your dosage. Do not use triphala if you are pregnant or nursing. Herbs may interact with certain drugs, so you are encouraged to talk to your alternative health care practitioner before using triphala if you are on other medications.
