Scalp Tonics: Tinctures vs. Oils

When I asked my mom to research Russian sources for scalp treatments, she sent me several recipes homemade hair treatments. The most popular were solutions based on vodka, tinctures of red pepper, nettles St. John’s Wort, suspended in a vodka solution. I never drink alcohol. So I wrinkled my nose at the very idea. After doing my research, I discovered that in many cultures, Mexican and Russian among these, scalp solutions based on vodka have been the most popular for centuries.

Here is one example: Tincture of Nettles

Add a teaspoon of nettles and a teaspoon of rosemary to a glass of vodka. Store in a warm, dark place in a dark glass bottle. Stir several times per day. In two weeks your tincture will be ready. Filter the liquid through gauze, pour into a small bottle, and close with a stopper. Twice a week, apply at night, using an old, soft toothbrush moistened with this tincture, then massage the scalp.

Admittedly, this tonic takes quite a bit of time and work to prepare. But there is another issue to consider. Alcohol causes dryness. That's the reason the recipe calls for using the tonic only twice per week.

I wanted to develop a scalp tonic that I could use every day. For that reason, I wanted it to contain a beneficial hair growth-stimulating oil. I was faced with the dilemma of finding the best possible combination: the right balance of oil to counteract the alcohol's dryness yet avoid oiliness, thereby allowing you to use the treatment twice or even three times a day if you wish, without the necessity of washing your hair after each application. Jojoba oil became my choice.

I thought long and hard before including alcohol. Since I was the one deciding on the final formula, I could have used any ingredient in my scalp tonic. For a time, I was trying to find something suitable other than alcohol, just to save me from having to explain my seeming diversion from my no alcohol rule. But whatever I used, it had to work great since my face and hair were going on the box cover.

I've tried various solutions over the years, and essential oils (in combinations or by themselves) as a scalp treatment just didn't work so well. Plus they would sit on my bathroom counter for months, even years without being completely used up. Oil scalp treatments are just too involved for my busy schedule. You can't go out, and you can't go to bed right after the application. You always have to wash your hair after the procedure. Since you have to dedicate up to half a day or at least a couple of hours to oil scalp treatments, most people simply do not use them often enough to make a difference. But even the time consuming aspect would not stop me from using only oils in my scalp formula.

But I had to admit that scalp treatments based on vodka (alcohol) were several times more effective than oil only scalp solutions because alcohol can deliver invigorating nutrients directly into your scalp better than any other product I've found. The active ingredients are all natural: Cayenne pepper, mustard greens, sage, lemon, stinging nettle, jojoba oil, and aloe vera.

But after developing this new formula, I tested it on myself, my family members and everyone who would volunteer. I use it every day, and I'm extremely happy with the results. We all noticed new hair growth at the forehead and temples area after 30 to 40 days. One of the many elated comments from others was: "When I run my fingers through my hair, I can feel a fullness that had began to elude me in recent years."

Skin vs. Scalp Exfoliation

Exfoliation is extremely important for your skin and scalp. Your scalp comprises five layers of skin and connective tissue, with an abundance of capillaries and blood vessels running through them to supply your hair with the nutrients it needs to grow and remain strong and healthy. The scalp is rich in sebaceous glands which secrete an oily substance sebum which surrounds the hair follicles, giving them moisture and protection.

As we age, scalp cells tend to thicken, compromising hair follicles, leading to thinning. Hair products containing DHT (dihydrotestosterone) can create a buildup on the scalp, clogging follicles and interfering with hair growth. DHT buildup constricts the blood supply, oxygen and nutrient uptake, causing the follicles and hair shafts to die. This buildup on the scalp and around hair follicles needs to be removed by regular exfoliation.

Facial and body skin are easily exfoliated by the regular use of a dry skin brush, but not so for the well-protected scalp. For facial exfoliation, I recommend a dry brush. For scalp exfoliation, your next best choice are natural fruit acids. There are five main types of fruit acids, the most well known are glycolic and lactic acids, followed by malic acid, citric acid and tartaric acid. The most effective combination available has been included in the new scalp tonic for the best exfoliating effect. Fruit acids effectively unglue stuck-on dead skin cells, allowing new cells to come to the surface. They also reduce dry skin and flakiness.

... Chamomile extract (Matricaria recutita). From the Greek for ˜earth apple, this plant's sweet scent gives it its name. Chamomile is an annual of the daisy family, used widely in cosmetics because it contains an astounding array of beneficial properties, which have been scientifically confirmed. Flavonoids, along with lipophilic compounds, help strengthen and reduce enlarged capillaries, combating redness. Azulene reduces swelling, cleansing pores of impurities. Phenolic derivatives relieve skin congestion and offer antiseptic properties. Chamomile oil contains alpha-bisabolol, which promotes tissue regeneration. These, along with Chamomile's antioxidant, emollient and anti-inflammatory properties, make it one of the most versatile herbal ingredients ever to be used in hair and skin care products.

... Salvia (sage) extract (Salvia officinalis). The Latin name Salvia means ˜to heal. This Mediterranean evergreen shrub, related to the mint family, has been favored since ancient times for its healing properties. ...Cayenne extract (Capsicum frutescens). Cayenne, made from the dried pods of chili peppers, has been used medicinally across the world for hundreds of years. It is thought to have originated in the French Guiana region known, appropriately, as Cayenne. Cayenne contains capsaicin, the source of its medicinal properties. Usually, the hotter cayenne pepper is, the more capsaicin it contains. Capsaicin helps relieve pain and reduce stickiness of platelets. Medical herbalist Dr. Richard Schultze places cayenne at the top of his list of most essential herbs “because it will make the other 9 work better. Cayenne pepper is the most effective stimulant of blood circulation there is. It works immediately to increase blood flow, acting as a catalyst to carry the beneficial effects of other herbs and substances in the blood to the area of application. ... Mustard Greens extract (Brassica juncea). The ancient Greeks thought mustard was a gift from Asclepious, the god of healing. Mustard greens actually originate in the Himalayan region. They are one of the most nutritious foods available, high in the antioxidant vitamins E, C and A. Vitamins A and E are lipid-soluble, while Vitamin C is water-soluble. Vitamin C works to break down histamine, the chemical responsible for allergic reactions in the body. Mustard is also valued for its circulation-enhancing benefits, and mustard poultices have long been a popular folk remedy. In Ayurvedic medicine, mustard extract has been used since ancient times to treat alopecia areata (patchy baldness), and is a common element in Ayurvedic practices promoting hair growth.

...Peppermint (Mentha × piperita). Peppermint is one of the most popular herbs used today, with a wide range of attractive benefits. It is a hybrid plant, a cross between watermint and spearmint, having ancient origins in Europe. It is high in menthol, which gives a cooling effect on the skin and a refreshing aroma. Mmenthol is appreciated for its calming and soothing properties while at the same time increasing circulation. Peppermint extract relieves skin irritation and itching, due to its analgesic and anesthetic effects. Other therapeutic virtues include antiseptic, astringent, circulatory stimulant and vasoconstrictor properties. Peppermint can be used to combat skin inflammations as well as acne, as long as not in too strong a concentration, which could irritate mucous membranes. Peppermint is believed to help regulate production of oil in the scalp when applied regularly, and its stimulating properties have been likened to getting a scalp massage.

...Bilberry Extract (Vaccinium myrtillus). Also known as whortleberry extract, this relative of the cranberry, blueberry, and huckleberry is used as a miscellaneous skin-conditioning agent. It is a natural source of AHA and is an astringent, cooling herb that tones the skin. Bilberry contains large amounts of tannins, which act as an astringent and anti-inflammatory and help stop bleeding. The flavonoids it contains help improve circulation and prevent platelets from clumping together. Laboratory experiments have shown extract of bilberry inhibits enzymes that can cause collagen degradation. The anthocyanosides it contains also strengthen capillaries and aid in forming healthy connective tissue. Bilberry extract serves as a moisturizer and exfoliant, and offers anti-oxidant properties.

...Sugar Cane Extract (Saccharum officinarum). A source of lactic acid with the capacity to leave the skin feeling smooth due to its moisturization and mild exfoliation properties. It safely and gently removes damaged, dead and dry skin cells. Glycolic acid from the sugar cane has the smallest molecular structure of all the AHAs, which supposedly allows for deeper skin penetration.

...Sugar Maple Extract (Acer saccharum). This extract works as a natural source of AHA, namely glycolic acid. Sugar Maple extract is a keratolytic, which means that when the epidermis produces excess skin, this extract helps remove it, as well as warts and other lesions. It causes the outer layer of the skin to loosen and shed. Keratolytics also work to soften keratin, a major part of our skin, which in turn helps to improve its moisture binding capabilities.

... Orange Extract (Citrus aurantium amara). This extract of the fruit of the orange, is a miscellaneous skin-conditioning agent. Used cosmetically, orange oil extract reduces puffiness and wrinkled skin. Both the oil and the peel are used for stimulating circulation, clearing up blemishes, and increasing perspiration, which assists in releasing toxins from skin and scalp. Orange peel is used as a natural exfoliator and provides a fresh, uplifting scent. Orange extract offers both astringent and exfoliating properties. The citric acid in orange extract can help stimulate collagen synthesis. Extract from the skin of oranges has astringent qualities and helps combat skin fragility. It contains d-limonene, sometimes used in industry as a fragrance and also as a solvent.

... Lemon Extract (Citrus medica limonum) is refreshing and purifying to the skin. It’s astringent properties help eliminate dead skin cells without disrupting the pH balance or stripping skin of natural oils. It also acts as a mild antiseptic. Lemon extract is beneficial for an oily skin condition. It is a natural purifier, cleanser, astringent, decongestant and tonic and has a refreshing scent. It also helps balance the fluid in the cells.
