Please Note!
The Neem oil we offer is labeled on the bottle as "For EXTERNAL Use Only" as we do not want to promote its internal use. It is only suitable for dietary use under the direct supervision of someone qualified in the administration of this substance.
What is Neem?
Neem (Azadirachta indica) is an amazing tree that grows wild all over India. In rural areas, it is practically considered to be a village pharmacy, because all the parts of tree are used for myriad medicinal and therapeutic purposes: leaves, bark, roots, flowers and seeds. For thousands of years the people of India have chewed the fresh Neem twigs as a remarkably effective natural toothbrush.
Neem has been recognized and esteemed in ancient Ayurvedic texts and in our own time by the U.S. National Research Council in its report, Neem: A Tree for Solving Global Problems. Its leaves and bark are traditionally used to heal rashes, minor wounds, and as a dentifrice. Naturally astringent and antiseptic, it is effective against bleeding gums, myriad of skin conditions, and scalp problems.
What are the Health Benefits of Neem?
Used externally, neem is naturally astringent, antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal. The leaves can also be prescribed for internal use in lowering blood sugar, healing ulcers and eradicating intestinal parasites. And then there are the health benefits to the planet with its agricultural use as an earth-friendly insecticide and repellent. Because neem is made from natural ingredients, it does not put any harmful chemicals back into the water or soil when it is used in products.
Medicinal and Cosmetic Uses
Neem is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic, and antiparasitic. Because of these properties, it is widely deployed in many different toiletries such as soap, toothpaste, hair care products, and skin care products. It is used to treat a wide array of diseases, illnesses, and problems, and is considered a cure-all in India. The oil has moisturizing and regenerative properties, contains Vitamin E, and has essential fatty acids. Scientific research today validates many of the traditional uses of Neem Oil, it is used to treat bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, boost the immune system, and for many specific health problems. It is also used to deter mosquitoes, fleas, flies, ticks, mites, and lice. Among other conditions, Neem Oil has been historically used to treat the following: Malarial fevers, diabetes, urinary problems, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scabies, gingivitis, swollen and bleeding gums, cavity prevention, ringworm, chicken pox, lice, dandruff, burns, wounds, athlete’s foot, sore throat, tiredness, cough, leprosy, hemorrhoids, intestinal worms, boils, ulcers, warts, herpes, arthritis, cancer, sprains, AIDS, cold sores, parasites, bed sores, rashes, gangrene, heart disease, gastritis, stomach problems, high blood pressure, sinusitis, hives, snake bites, hypertension, hair loss, heart burn, cholesterol, hangover, shingles, chronic fatigue, headaches, poor circulation, influenza, colds, insomnia, tuberculosis, immune system, indigestion, conjunctivitis, inflammation, urinary stones, candida, kidney problems, wrinkles, eye disorders, yeast infections, earache, hot spots, and nausea.
Neem oil is exceptionally rich and contains a heavy odor. It will need to be diluted accordingly before adding it to your products, and sometime heated to turn it into a pourable liquid. We recommend experimenting in small batches with this oil, so that the odor does not adversely alter your final product. Below are several usages for Neem Oil:
Athlete’s foot: Add a few drops to a foot soak, foot powder, or anti-fungal salve recipe.
For dandruff and head lice: Massage with Olive or other carrier oil into the hair and scalp. Leave in for one hour, and then shampoo out.
In salves-- add a few drops to your healing salve.
In soaps-- use with your base oils.
Garden pesticide-- Mix with Castille Soap and water, spray onto infested plants as needed. The spray will suffocate soft bodied insects, and will repel other insects.
Acne-- mix a small amount into your facial clay and apply to problem spots.
Bath-- mix a few drops into the bathwater.
Bug repellent: Use in lotion to deter bugs and mosquitoes.
Hand soap: Add to liquid hand soap for antibacterial properties
What is the Strongest Benefit of Neem?
Neems strongest benefit is its versatility, as there are so many uses. It really lives up to its name as an "Ayurveda Pharmacy in a Jar". We have some customers that are using it with remarkable success for serious skin ailments like eczema, where strong and costly pharmaceutical medications have failed.
The Indian people revere this tree as a Divine gift to mankind, to heal and to soothe its many ills, and its flowers even have been given the significance of "Spiritual Atmosphere". We feel gratitude for this amazing tree that grows so abundantly in the harshest of conditions and so aptly manifests the healing, harmonizing wisdom of both Nature and Spirit.
HAIR
For more intensive hair and scalp care:
1.
Massage the scalp with 3-4 droppers full of our cold pressed Neem oil (enough oil to saturate hair and scalp). For longer or really thick hair add the 3-4 droppers full of Neem oil to TheraNeem Scalp Therapé Shampoo, Kids Therapé Shampoo and BodyWash or olive oil to help extend the neem oil and to completely coat and saturate the hair and scalp with Neem. Massage vigorously into hair and scalp for 1-2 minutes.
2.
Leave the Neem oil combined with TheraNeem Shampoo or olive oil on hair and scalp for 1 hour.
3.
Cover hair with a shower cap or old towel.
4. vComb through hair while the oil is still in the hair to remove any “undesirables”.
5.
Wash hair again with TheraNeem Shampoo, allowing the shampoo to “rest” on the hair and scalp for 3-5 minutes. Finish by leaving a small amount of TheraNeem Conditioner on hair as a leave-in conditioner.
6.
Repeat this process for up to 3 days, or as needed.
7.
You can also try adding 10-20 drops of organic lavender essential oils per application to help soothe and support healthy scalp and hair.
8.
Repeat for 3 days or as needed.
For moderate hair and scalp care:
1.
Add 3-4 drops of Neem oil to TheraNeem shampoo, or add 3-4 drops of Neem oil to olive oil. Use enough shampoo or olive oil to completely coat hair and scalp. Massage vigorously into hair and scalp for 1-2 minutes.
2.
Follow above steps 2-6 above for best results.
For scent sensitive children or for children under 2:
1.
Use TheraNeem shampoo to fully coat and saturate the hair and scalp, or try organic olive oil only, or mayonnaise. Massage vigorously into hair and scalp for 1-2 minutes.
2.
Follow above steps 2-6 above for best results.
A new use for the TheraNeem Herbal Outdoor Spray! Got the itch? No time to shampoo or leave Neem oil in your hair?
For a “quick fix” that smells great-spray our Herbal Outdoor Spray liberally directly to scalp and massage thoroughly. Leave on hair and re-apply 2-3 times per day to help get rid of “undesirables” and to soothe an occasional irritation.
Herbal Outdoor Spray is concentrated, water-based spray with neem and essential oils to support a healthy scalp.
Safe for the whole family and with kids over 2. Avoid contact with eyes.
FOR THE PETS
Pets are part of our family - Neem can help soothe occasional skin issues and help your pet stay healthy and itch less.
Website support for pet care:

Neem oil and dogs:
To help manage skin and coat issues use undiluted Neem oil (3-4 drops), directly applied to skin and coat 1-2 times per day.
For occasional redness or irritation: Apply undiluted Neem oil where the skin is irritated.
For itching: Apply the undiluted Neem oil to hard to reach areas so that it is difficult to lick off; behind the ears, under the haunches, and under the tail.
For intensive soothing support, add an extra dropper full (20-30 drops) of neem oil to the amount of TheraNeem shampoo you will be using to bathe your dog. This additional neem oil will knock down the lather of the shampoo, but it will still clean well. The additional Neem oil is especially beneficial for dogs whose skin is red or irritated by providing cooling and soothing actions.
For dogs over 15 pounds, 1 supercritical neem capsule a day for 5 days with food. Use the 1 TheraNeem leaf capsule per day if longer use is desired, for maximum of 1 month or as directed by your veterinarian.
For dogs, you may also spray their bedding with the Neem herbal Outdoor spray.
For cats:
For your feline friends, you can apply 3-4 drops of undiluted neem oil around their ears, in their armpits, under their tails and haunches. Undiluted Neem oil (3-4 drops) can be applied to support healthy skin and coat and with occasional skin issues.
Do not use Herbal Outdoor Spray on cats! All suggestions for Neem oil are for topical use only. If irritation persists, consult with your veterinarian.
HOME
For the laundry:
For the below - you can also use our Neem oil for the Garden.
Wash everything! Bedding, pillows, couch cushion covers etc… Premix 1/2 oz of Neem oil with your liquid laundry detergent, add to hot water. Once the tub is full, add your clothes or bedding – wash once, don’t dry. Re-wash with your regular detergent. Dry on high heat.
If any “aroma of Neem” remains in your washer, try the following. Add 20-30 drops of pure lemon or orange essential oil to a rag with a small amount of regular liquid laundry detergent. Wipe down the inside of your washing machine with the rag with the soap and essential oils to absorb any neem residue. Wash an empty load on HOT setting with 1 cup of baking soda and your regular detergent. Repeat the wiping of the inside of the machine with orange or lemon essential oil on a rag if needed. This should eliminate any reside of the neem oil.
You can also try adding Citra-Solve to an empty load or using a rag to wipe the inside of your washing machine. Follow the manufactures recommendations if using Citra-Solve.
After testing in a non-conspicuous area for staining, spray with Herbal Outdoor Spray. Once it dries, vacuum thoroughly to pick up “undesirables”.
For the rug:
Fill a quart size jar with diatomaceous earth (3/4 jar) & baking soda (1/4 jar). Add 30 drops each of the following essential oils:
Lemongrass 30 drops,
Tea Tree 30 drops
Eucalyptus globulus 30 drops.
Shake well to disperse the essential oils. Sprinkle liberally on all carpets and rugs and allow to “rest” for at least 4 hours.
This protocol is non- toxic to humans, however it is important to keep your pets out of the room (especially cats) as this concentration of essential oils is not good for their health to walk on or breathe. They will hate the smell too!
Vacuum up all of the earth, baking soda and essential oils. Repeat as needed
Or rent a rug shampooer, instead of recommended shampoo – use TheraNeem shampoo (or even TheraNeem pet shampoo).
