Another product that I am really excited about is our new food grade Diatomaceous Earth. With new products, what tends to happen is that I start to hear of an item here and there from customers and friends. After I hear about it so many times, I start to research. I kept hearing about Diatomaceous Earth over and over again, so I spent a few days studying it... and am I glad that I did! Our dogs currently seem to have picked up fleas and deep-down I know that Diatomaceous Earth is the natural answer! I am also excited because I know it will furthermore de-worm and de-parasite every single dog and horse that we have on our property :-) This product works for so many things, which I am about to discuss, but first let's learn exactly what Diatomaceous Earth is.

Diatomaceous Earth comes to us via the one-celled plant-creature called the Diatom. They live in the Earth's waterways and as they synthesize the water, they build up these mineral silica crustations around themselves. They only live for six days and after they die, these mineral crustations fall to the bottom of the water. In a few select areas in the world where it has been untouched for thousands of years, huge deposits of Diatomaceous Earth are built up, as seen in this picture to the left.

Diatomaceous Earth is hence not really "earth"; it's more like fossil shell flour - nothing more than the silica shells of these little one-celled diatoms. The micronized pieces of the Diatomaceous Earth powder are extremely hard and sharp. This is what makes it so effective for killing fleas, plus parasites and worms in animals and humans. This food grade Diatomaceous Earth is ground down into a micronized size and when you rub it inbetween your fingers really hard, you would have no idea that it is actually so hard and sharp at the smallest level. It just feels like any type of powder. However, to insects, fleas, tapeworms, mites and other parasites, it is just like shards of glass.

The Diatomaceous Earth gets onto the insect, cockroach, flea, or parasite, and as they move, these tiny microscopic sharp pieces scratch off the waxy coating of these bugs and they eventually dehydrate and die within an hour. You can put a coating of Diatomaceous Earth on your dog, for example, and it has the great potential to kill any fleas and ticks they are carrying more effectively than toxic chemicals, and in a very short time frame. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) has the potential to work effectively on bed bugs, mites, for flower gardens (just sprinkle it on the flowers and dirt), for organic gardening (effective against all garden "pests"), and for fruit trees (just mix with water and spray it on the fruit trees for pest protection). It is also great to feed about a tablespoon of DE to pets, because it has the potential to completely de-worm them in literally just a few days.

This product is food grade and humans can consume it too, but I recommend only consuming Diatomaceous Earth short term against tapeworms and other macroparasites. I know of some people who take it every day for managing parasites and cleaning the walls of the intestines, but it's not something I would personally intake on an ongoing basis. Although it is micronized and you can't really cut your fingers with it, no matter how much you pinch and rub it, still... it is still like glass on some level. For me, I would be concerned it might create polyps in my intestines or possible other issues if I consumed it long-term. In the short-term, I consider Diatomaceous Earth an outstanding product for simple, natural parasite/pest control for the whole family!

This variety of maca does well at lower elevations, unlike red maca which thrives at very high altitudes. We love it for its strong life-force and all the power it has as a food. With fresh maca we have so many more culinary possibilities compared to just powder! And consider the freshness...the life-force of fresh maca to powdered is vast. Hardy to all temperate zones. Biennial, radish-like, rosette forming plant native to the high Peruvian Puna. This is a select cultivar that gives high yields of firm, yellow roots and demonstrates a tolerance for low elevation.

Sow the seed on the surface of the seed bed, stir it around with your fingers, then tamp in securely. Germination is in 4 days at 65 degrees F soil temperature. Plant prefers fall, winter and spring conditions for growth. Full sun and a fast-draining soil is preferred. Maca likes a somewhat alkaline soil, such as decomposed granite or volcanic soils. Composted manures are a good fertilizer for Maca. Thin to 6 inch spacing, and harvest after the first year of growth. Best to direct-seed in September and harvest in May or so, unless winters are very snowy. With a little snow, the plant grows through the winter, which is preferred, as it encourages bulbing (the hypocotyl). If left in the field for 2 years, the root will become quite woody and the plant will go to seed. Probably the best regions for growing maca are high steppes in tropical or subtropical countries. We love Wild Chamomile because it is strong and reseeds well, and has so many uses such as the tea for calming energy which can be made after harvest and drying.

(Matricaria chamomilla) which is also known as Wild Chamomile and Hungarian or German Chamomile, is an annual herb originally from Europe which has now naturalized in many places around the world. It can now be found growing along wide open fields, gravel roads, and along fences. Wild Chamomile has a lovely pineapple scent, and when placed in a garden or food forest, it has been known to help weaker plants thrive. The somewhat erect branch is round, hollow, and can thrive to over 20 inches tall. The leaves are bipinnate in nature, finely divided, pale green and have a wonderful feather-like appearance. The flowers bloom from May to October and look like daisies...about 1 inch across. As soon as the flowers bloom they are ready for harvest, cut and enjoy, more flowers will appear.

Family: Aster (Asteraceae)

Hardy to all zones.

Annual or overwintering annual. This is the delightfully aromatic Chamomile of tea fame. Perfect for gentle bedtime sedation or for treating stomachache. Plant prefers full sun and regular garden soil, and cool soils for germination. Sow on surface and press in hard. Sow in early spring for flowers by early summer.

We chose this cherry tomato for its vigorous indeterminate vining behavior. It literally becomes a large shrub covered with clusters of fruit. The more compost we give it, the bigger it becomes. Be prepared to give it space, as 6-7 ft is common.
