Fresh maqui berries and infusions of maqui leaves have long been used in the traditional native herbal medicine by Mapuche Indians to treat different ailments. The maqui berry juice is now used as an ingredient in many health drinks. Maqui berries have the highest known antioxidant level of all fruits, almost 3 times higher than that of acai berries. Maqui is also the name of a wine made from maqui berries.

Phytochemicals

These are typical phytochemicals found in maqui berry: anthocyanins, delphinidin, malvidin, petunidin, cumarins, triterpenes, flavonoids, cyanidin.

Benefits of Maqui Berry

Maqui berries are traditionnaly used to strength and stamina and to treat ailments such as sore throat, diarrhea, ulcers and fever. The maqui berry is a traditional food of Mapuche Indians and has recently hit the Western market as a one of the superfoods, next to acai and pomegranate.

Why Use Maqui Berry Powder?

You'll be hearing a lot more about this rain forest fruit going forward. Maqui is the off the chart for almost everything that kale is, in addition to naturally occurring Omega-3, 6 and 9 oils. It's not only good for you, but many world class athletes drink it while training because it's so loaded with nutrition and protein it can be a complete meal.

Maqui berries are among the most nutritious foods of the Amazon, rich in B vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Maqui berries also contain oleic acid (omega-9), a beneficial fatty acid.

At juice bars and health stores around the country, the hip new taste is Maqui (pronounced mah-key) a grape-size, deep-purple berry that grows atop palm trees in the Brazilian jungle.

There is more to Maqui berry that meets the eye. Most people do not know the additional benefits they can get by taking supplements made out of the extracts of this Chilean berry. Most people are of the illusion that Maqui berry healing properties are restricted just to burning down one’s fat. Such people should spend some time and analyze how and why did they get fat and what other ailments are associated with obesity. Only when they find out about those things, will they be able to appreciate the multi benefits derived from taking Maqui berry health supplements.

The outstanding health benefits derived from maqui berry come from its high concentration of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are specific kinds of flavonoids that give the deep purple color of the berry. They are also present in other fruits, such as the acai berry, grapes, plums, black currants, and blueberries, and in dark-colored flowers such as pansies and petunias. Anthocyanins are found by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to be the most powerful form of antioxidants found in plants—and they are most abundant in maqui berries.

A daily diet infused with maqui berry, therefore, is a diet infused with the loaded health benefits of anthocyanins. Here are the most powerful of these benefits.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

At controllable stages, inflammation is considered one of the body’s first defenses against infection. But during inflammation, enzymes that damage blood vessels are produced and leaked into the capillaries. Oxidants add more to the equation. Anthocyanins in the maqui berry counteract the enzymes and oxidants to repair the damage and prevent more damage from being done. As an anti-inflammatory, maqui berries can help reduce allergic reactions and promote stronger blood vessels.

Healthy Nervous System

We have learned the hard way that the brain is particularly vulnerable to damage caused by free radicals and oxidants that come from the environment. It is not surprising why degenerative neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease rise in number as people age. With a healthy dose of antioxidant-rich maqui berries, the damage done to the brain and the onset of neurological conditions can easily be precluded.

Protects Blood Vessels

Maqui berry contains an abundance of antioxidants that powerfully work against damage to the walls of both large and small blood vessels. Studies show that hydrogen peroxide found in the blood lead to oxidation and the creation of free radicals that lead to damage. As a result of this, white blood cells flock to the area and begin the process of building up fatty deposits in the blood vessels, ultimately leading to atherosclerosis. Maqui berry also helps relax the blood vessels to stop improper constriction that can cause erectile dysfunction in men, hypertension, and other cardiovascular disorders.

Better Diabetes Management

One of the complications of diabetes is damage to the smaller blood vessels. This happens because an abnormally high level of sugar in the blood releases large molecules that the smaller capillaries cannot absorb. The presence of anthocyanins from the maqui berry strengthens blood vessels and increases their permeability, preventing damage due to blockage and promoting better diabetes management.

Better Eyesight

Although not yet entirely backed by solid research, the fact that anthocyanins found in the maqui berry has been proven by several studies to improve eyesight. Researchers have shown that subjects who were give doses of anthocyanins have gained better night vision and decreased visual fatigue after being exposed to visual displays for two hours.
