Protein-Packed Spirulina Powder
Spirulina is a vivid blue-green algae that commonly grows in freshwater lakes and ponds. It is considered a complete protein, as it contains an ideal balance of all essential amino acids, and spirulina powder is immensely more digestible than other rich protein sources like red meat and even soy.
Its whopping protein content isn't the only asset that gives spirulina superfood status--our powder is loaded with vitamins A through E, iron, potassium and calcium. All it takes is one to two teaspoons per day, mixed into virtually any food or liquid, to add a major boost of protein, vitamins and minerals to your diet.
Spirulina Algae Through the Ages
Use of this nutritious microorganism has been traced back thousands of years to the ancient people of the Aztec civilization and the earliest tribes to settle near Central Africa's Lake Chad. Cakes of dried spirulina algae called "dihe" are still sold in Chad's markets today, but many less-traditional applications are in the works.
Named the "Best Food for the Future" at the 1974 United Nations World Food Conference, spirulina soon caught on as a possible solution to severe malnutrition in third-world nations. The Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM) was later founded to promote spirulina benefits like its high tolerability among malnourished people, low incidence of side effects and eco-friendly cultivation practices.
A true future food, it may soon be cultivated in zero gravity by NASA and the European Space Agency, both of which have envisioned spirulina's prospective role in long-term space missions.
Our spirulina is grown in open-channel, shallow raceway ponds that are man made and carefully controlled. Paddle wheels move the water to accelerate the growth of the spirulina. The growers must continually add clean, fresh water and nutrients to the ponds to keep the spirulina thriving. The spirulina is harvested with filters, washed in fresh water and is then dried by spray drying machines. Our spirulina is non- irradiated and non-GMO.
Spirulina's outstanding nutritional value is undisputed, and human research into its other properties is ongoing. But extensive lab and animal research suggests a broad range of possible spirulina health benefits:
Promising clinical research indicating that spirulina powder may boost production of antibodies has fueled hope that this amazing algae may even combat cancer and HIV.
